Barry Evans founded Calxeda in 2008 as its CEO and led the company to raise $103M in one of the most significant fabless semiconductor startup financings in recent history while earning recognition by MIT as one of the 50 most innovative companies in the world. Mr. Evans is an 20 year veteran of the semiconductor industry having held several roles in management, sales and marketing across wireless handheld, telecommunications, embedded servers, and embedded computing applications. Prior to founding Calxeda, he was the VP and GM of Marvell’s Application Processing Business Unit in the Cellular and Handheld Group (acquired from Intel). Mr. Evans was responsible for the Xscale processor (ARM-based) SoC product line, the world’s highest performance handheld processors with revenues exceeding $300 million. Prior to this, Mr. Evans served in GM and Director roles at Intel responsible for customer engagements and product strategies to address the wireless handheld and infrastructure markets. He holds a BSEE from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Boston University.
Chief Financial Officer
Tim is a veteran technology entrepreneur and most recently was co-founder, CFO, and board member at Inphi (NYSE:IPHI), a fabless semiconductor company serving the enterprise computing and infrastructure markets. Previously Tim was Director of Marketing at MindSpring Enterprises and Director of Broadband Technology at Earthlink Network. Prior to that Tim was a microwave and systems engineer with Hewlett-Packard and was an entrepreneur in two instrumentation related startups. Tim has a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from The Anderson School at UCLA.
Co-Founder & Vice President, Hardware Engineering
David Borland has served in roles of Vice President and Director of Engineering at leading semiconductor companies such as Intel, AMD and Marvell and brings low power SoC architecture, design and high volume manufacturing leadership to Calxeda. Mr. Borland delivered innovative market leading Cellular and Application Processors to high volume mobile applications building a “ground up” business for Intel that was acquired by Marvell. Upon joining Intel in 1999, he led the ADI/Intel Joint Development that delivered a new DSP Core architecture and implementation with industry leading power/performance and effective C programming that is used by Analog Devices, Intel, Marvell and MediaTek. Mr. Borland was with AMD for 14 years where he was the Product Line Manager of Cordless Telephones. He began his engineering career at AMD as a product and design engineer on single chip modems after earning a BSEE in 1984.
Co-Founder & Vice President, Software Engineering
Larry Wikelius brings over twenty years of operational and leadership experience in the high technology industry. As a technology executive Mr. Wikelius has been responsible for product strategy, design, development, delivery and support in product areas such as enterprise systems management, scalable computing systems, storage systems, system security, network administration, data mining and business intelligence. Mr. Wikelius has also played key roles in a number of startup companies leading to successful liquidity events. Prior to joining Calxeda Mr. Wikelius was at Newisys, where he was Vice President for Server and Storage Strategic Alliances. During his tenure there Newisys grew from no revenue to an annual run rate of over $450M in just two years. Mr. Wikelius also played a key role in the acquisition of Newisys by Sanmina-SCI (SANM) in 2003. Prior to Newisys, Mr. Wikelius served in Executive Level roles at Voyence, Net Perceptions and Hewlett Packard. Mr. Wikelius began his high-tech career as a software engineer at Data General Corporation (now EMC) in Westborough, MA. Mr. Wikelius holds an MBA from Northeastern University in Boston and has a BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Wikelius has also completed executive business courses at the University of Michigan Business School.
Mark Davis brings over 30 years of high performance computing system, architecture, and application experience to Calxeda. Before joining, Mr. Davis was Senior Director for Network Analytics at AlterPoint, and Director of ASIC Development and Scaling Technologies at Newisys. Mr. Davis has also held key management, architecture, and design roles at Knowledge Discovery One, Hewlett Packard, and Convex Computer. Mr. Davis led the development of cache coherent scaling ASICs for Hypertransport and QPI processors, led the development and deployment of the 256 processor HP Exemplar supercomputer at Caltech / JPL (the largest CC-NUMA computer in the world at the time), led the development of the OS kernel development for the Convex SPP-2000 supercomputer, and the development of scalable data mining algorithms. Mr. Davis has 33 patent filings, and holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering, and Bachelors in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering degrees.
Gopal Hegde is responsible for engineering, architecture and manufacturing operations for Calxeda. Mr. Hegde has over 20 years experience driving significant technology and product innovations in silicon, software and systems engineering. Mr. Hegde joined Calxeda from Cisco where he was a Senior Director of Engineering and an early member of the management team that drove design and development of Cisco’s highly innovative and hugely successful Unified Computing System (UCS) product line. Prior to Cisco, Mr. Hegde worked for Adaptec where he managed Adaptec RAID engineering team driving revenues in excess of $180M per year. Mr. Hegde joined Adaptec from Intel where he was responsible for Server Platform IO Architecture and planning. In this role, Mr. Hegde led the task force that redefined server platform architecture by integrating PCIe into Intel CPUs. He also drove technology development and standardization of Backplane Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ap) Data Center Bridging (DCBX), Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and IO Virtualization technologies for Intel servers. Mr. Hegde joined Intel through Intel’s acquisition of Level One communications and after acquisition, served as General Manager of Ethernet switching division in Intel Communications group for 4 years. Prior to Intel, Mr. Hegde held management positions at Acclaim Communications (acquired by Level One Communications) and MiLAN Technology (acquired by Digi International). Mr. Hegde holds an MSECE from University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and an ME from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India
Vice President, Sales and Business Development
Bob Baughman brings over 25 years of business development, sales management and product management experience over a wide range of technologies. Mr Baughman was Vice President of North American Sales at start-up Dialogic which had a successful IPO was later acquired by Intel. At Intel, Mr Baughman assumed the role of World Wide Group Sales Director for Intel’s $1B+ Communications Infrastructure Group. Prior to joining Calxeda, Mr Baughman was Vice President of Product Management for Polycoms’s Video Solution Group and Director of Product Management for Marvell Semiconductor where he led the planning of those companies product roadmap strategy and technical partnerships. Mr. Baughman’s broad technical expertise spans communication and application processor semiconductors, embedded computing and voice processing systems, enterprise video management and transcoding software and end user video compression systems and user interfaces. Mr. Baughman graduated with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a BSEE.
Vice President, Product Operations and Manufacturing
Steve Beatty joins Calxeda with 18 years of Manufacturing and Business Operations experience. Recently Steve served as Senior Vice President for SigmaTel, Inc. responsible for Product Lines and Manufacturing Operations. SigmaTel held its IPO in 2003 and was later acquired by Freescale, Inc. During his career at SigmaTel, Steve maintained responsibility for the company’s Operations and Manufacturing Group. Before joining SigmaTel in 2000, Steve’s experience included many areas of semiconductor manufacturing while at Motorola SPS. His experience includes advanced fab process technology, product and test development, global manufacturing operations, supplier management, and the assurance of quality processes. Prior to Motorola, he served in active duty in the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power Program. Steve is a graduate of Texas A&M University with aBachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering.
Vice President, Marketing
Karl Freund has held significant leadership positions across the computer hardware and software industry. As WW VP of Marketing and End User Business Development, Mr. Freund connects Calxeda’s product strategy with requirements from our valued customers, drives interest and demand for Calxeda products, and works with our valued software partners. Previously, Karl led several marketing organization for the IBM Company, including IBM System z Mainframes, IBM Power Systems, and Tivoli. Mr. Freund has also served as vice president of marketing for a variety of high tech firms, supercomputer leaders SGI and Cray Research, and Hewlett-Packard Company where he was worldwide marketing manager of the HP9000 Workstation Systems Division.
Freund received a master’s degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematical Sciences from Texas A&M University.
Vice President, Systems Engineering
Henry Hoang has over 25 years experience in hardware systems, ASIC, FPGA development with high-tech companies in all stages of growth, from startup to multibillion dollar corporations. Mr. Hoang joined Calxeda from HP TippingPoint where he was the Section Manager responsible for development of high-end network security systems. Mr. Hoang joined HP through its acquisition of TippingPoint Technology in 2010 where he was the Hardware Engineering Director. Prior to TippingPoint, Mr. Hoang worked for Cisco Systems as a Sr. Hardware Manager responsible for development of Cisco Catalyst Switch product line. Mr. Hoang joined Cisco through its acquisition of NetSpeed in 1998 where he was a Sr. Hardware design engineer. Prior to NetSpeed, Mr. Hoang worked at multiple successful startups Efficient Networks, Networth, and Cabletron Systems. Mr. Hoang graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BSEE degree.
General Manager, Fleet Services, & Vice President, Strategy
Per Larsen joined Calxeda in 2013 after serving in an advisory capacity since 2009. Mr. Larsen is a 40-year veteran of the IT Industry in Europe and since 1994 as an executive in USA, serving in corporate roles with global responsibility.
Mr. Larsen is a long time executive at IBM, serving in several global executive roles, most notably as VP, Marketing and Strategy, for the IBM UNIX Server business from 2000 till 2006 where IBM had been established as the leader of the UNIX Server Industry, and as the VP, Marketing and Strategy, for the ThinkPad business from early on until 1998 where the ThinkPad was established as the leader of the portable computer Industry. Mr. Larsen also served as the CEO of Olicom Americas, a leading provider of networking infrastructure. Mr. Larsen retired from IBM in 2008. Since then he has served on the boards with several start-ups in Europe and USA.
Vice President, Human Resources
Angie McDermott has over two decades of experience in human resources, attracting, developing, and retaining key talent at all stages of company growth. Prior to joining Calxeda, Dr. McDermott served in a variety of human resources management roles at companies including Dell, Convio and Proctor & Gamble. Most recently, she was Vice President of Leadership Development and Culture at Blackbaud. Dr. McDermott holds a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Houston.
Vice President, SoC Engineering
Rami Sinno has over 24 years semiconductor experience in architecture, design, management, and planning. He joined Calxeda from Freescale where he led the Networking IP and SOC design teams. Prior to that, Mr. Sinno has held several technical and leadership positions in low power microprocessor and SOC design and development at Intel, and then Marvell. He was part of the team that developed the first Intel XScale® Processor, fundamentally changing the definition of low power and high performance microprocessor. Mr. Sinno is fluent in 3 languages and has extensive experience in multi-cultural environments. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona, and a Masters of Business Administration from Arizona State University.
