Barry Evans, Co-Founder, CEO, Board of Directors
Barry Evans founded Calxeda in 2008 as its CEO and led the company to raise $48M in one of the most significant fabless semiconductor startup financings in recent history while earning recognition by MIT as one of the 50 most innovative companies in the world. Mr. Evans is an 20 year veteran of the semiconductor industry having held several roles in management, sales and marketing across wireless handheld, telecommunications, embedded servers, and embedded computing applications. Prior to founding Calxeda, he was the VP and GM of Marvell’s Application Processing Business Unit in the Cellular and Handheld Group (acquired from Intel). Mr. Evans was responsible for the Xscale processor (ARM-based) SoC product line, the world’s highest performance handheld processors with revenues exceeding $300 million. Prior to this, Mr. Evans served in GM and Director roles at Intel responsible for customer engagements and product strategies to address the wireless handheld and infrastructure markets. He holds a BSEE from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Boston University.
Larry Wikelius, Co-Founder & VP Software Engineering
Larry Wikelius brings over twenty years of operational and leadership experience in the high technology industry. As a technology executive Mr. Wikelius has been responsible for product strategy, design, development, delivery and support in product areas such as enterprise systems management, scalable computing systems, storage systems, system security, network administration, data mining and business intelligence. Mr. Wikelius has also played key roles in a number of startup companies leading to successful liquidity events. Prior to joining Calxeda Mr. Wikelius was at Newisys, where he was Vice President for Server and Storage Strategic Alliances. During his tenure there Newisys grew from no revenue to an annual run rate of over $450M in just two years. Mr. Wikelius also played a key role in the acquisition of Newisys by Sanmina-SCI (SANM) in 2003. Prior to Newisys, Mr. Wikelius served in Executive Level roles at Voyence, Net Perceptions and Hewlett Packard. Mr. Wikelius began his high-tech career as a software engineer at Data General Corporation (now EMC) in Westborough, MA. Mr. Wikelius holds an MBA from Northeastern University in Boston and has a BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Wikelius has also completed executive business courses at the University of Michigan Business School.
David Borland, Co-Founder & VP Hardware Engineering
David Borland has served in roles of Vice President and Director of Engineering at leading semiconductor companies such as Intel, AMD and Marvell and brings low power SoC architecture, design and high volume manufacturing leadership to Calxeda. Mr. Borland delivered innovative market leading Cellular and Application Processors to high volume mobile applications building a “ground up” business for Intel that was acquired by Marvell. Upon joining Intel in 1999, he led the ADI/Intel Joint Development that delivered a new DSP Core architecture and implementation with industry leading power/performance and effective C programming that is used by Analog Devices, Intel, Marvell and MediaTek. Mr. Borland was with AMD for 14 years where he was the Product Line Manager of Cordless Telephones. He began his engineering career at AMD as a product and design engineer on single chip modems after earning a BSEE in 1984.
Mark Davis, Chief Architect
Mark Davis brings over 25 years of high performance computing system, architecture, and application experience to Calxeda. Before joining, Mr. Davis was Senior Director for Network Analytics at AlterPoint, and Director of ASIC Development and Scaling Technologies at Newisys. Mr. Davis has also held key management, architecture, and design roles at Knowledge Discovery One, Hewlett Packard, and Convex Computer. Mr. Davis led the development of cache coherent scaling ASICs for Hypertransport and QPI processors, led the development and deployment of the 256 processor HP Exemplar supercomputer at Caltech / JPL (the largest CC-NUMA computer in the world at the time), led the development of the OS kernel development for the Convex SPP-2000 supercomputer, and the development of scalable data mining algorithms. Mr. Davis has 7 patent filings, and holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering, and Bachelors in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering degrees.
Ross Goolsby, CFO
Ross Goolsby is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of diverse experience in finance, accounting, information technology, and human resources. Prior to joining Calxeda, Ross served as chief financial officer for publicly traded Valence Technology Inc (NASDAQ: VLNC). Previously, Ross held chief financial officer positions with HealthTronics, Inc. SigmaTel, Inc., and Utiliserve, Inc. He began his career working in the Houston and Dallas offices of Ernst & Young. Ross earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Houston, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Karl M. Freund, VP Marketing
Mr. Freund has held significant leadership positions across the computer hardware and software industry. Currently, he leads worldwide marketing for Calxeda, Inc. In this role, he leads strategic market planning, market requirements, positioning, launches, and market development efforts to support Calxeda’s business plans. Karl enjoys working with clients, partners, sales teams, analysts, press, and development teams to understand how to transform technology into customer value.
Previously, Karl led several marketing organization for the IBM Company, including IBM System z Mainframes, IBM Power Systems, and Tivoli. Most recently he led the effort to redefine the IBM Mainframe to embrace and leverage Power and Intel based processors as part of the mainframe environment, culminating in the launch of the IBM Enterprise System in July 2010. During his tenure in System p, he helped IBM leap from 3rd place to the worldwide market share leader in the UNIX market segment. Prior to joining IBM Server Group, Karl was the Vice President of Marketing for Tivoli Software, a division of IBM Software, where he led the integration of Tivoli marketing into the family of IBM Software.
Prior to joining IBM, Mr. Freund was chief executive officer of SuperSale.com, an Internet start-up that developed web-based sales and marketing tools for the automotive retail market. Mr. Freund has also served as vice president of marketing for a variety of high tech firms, including hotel software start-up IdeaS, Inc, supercomputer leader Cray Research, and workstation innovator Silicon Graphics (SGI). Freund spent the first 16 years of his career with Hewlett-Packard Company, where he held a wide variety of positions in the US and internationally, from operating system software designer to the worldwide marketing manager of the HP9000 Workstation Systems Division.
Freund received a master’s degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematical Sciences from Texas A&M University.
In his spare time, Karl enjoys spending time with his wife in their Austin, Texas, home near the shores of Lake Travis, where he periodically indulges in a variety of water sports, yoga, gardening, cooking, and fine wines.
Steve Beatty, VP Manufacturing
Steve Beatty joins Calxeda with 18 years of Manufacturing and Business Operations experience. Recently Steve served as Senior Vice President for SigmaTel, Inc. responsible for Product Lines and Manufacturing Operations. SigmaTel held its IPO in 2003 and was later acquired by Freescale, Inc. During his career at SigmaTel, Steve maintained responsibility for the company's Operations and Manufacturing Group. Before joining SigmaTel in 2000, Steve's experience included many areas of semiconductor manufacturing while at Motorola SPS. His experience includes advanced fab process technology, product and test development, global manufacturing operations, supplier management, and the assurance of quality processes. Prior to Motorola, he served in active duty in the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power Program. Steve is a graduate of Texas A&M University with aBachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering.
Bob Baughman, VP Sales and Business Development
Bob Baughman brings over 25 years of business development, sales management and product management experience over a wide range of technologies. Mr Baughman was Vice President of North American Sales at start-up Dialogic which had a successful IPO was later acquired by Intel. At Intel, Mr Baughman assumed the role of World Wide Group Sales Director for Intel's $1B+ Communications Infrastructure Group. Prior to joining Calxeda, Mr Baughman was Vice President of Product Management for Polycoms's Video Solution Group and Director of Product Management for Marvell Semiconductor where he led the planning of those companies product roadmap strategy and technical partnerships. Mr. Baughman's broad technical expertise spans communication and application processor semiconductors, embedded computing and voice processing systems, enterprise video management and transcoding software and end user video compression systems and user interfaces. Mr. Baughman graduated with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a BSEE.
